  1. IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION OF "MANAGE
  2. YOUR CONTACTS" (FORMLY KNOWN AS "THE CONTACT MANAGER"), 
  3. FOLLOW THESE STEPS BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW VERSION:

  6. 1. Make a backup of your current, working copy and data.  If you 
  7. have enough room on your hard disk, it should be sufficient to 
  8. just copy it to another subdirectory.
  9.  
  10. 2. Run your current, working copy of the program and 
  11. export your data to an external file:
  12.  
  13. To export using a version PRIOR to 2.1 (excluding v 2.1):
  14.    a. Choose "I/O" from the pull-down menu.
  15.    b. Select "Full List in Column Format".
  16.    c. Choose "File" for your destination.
  17.    d. Select "Text Format" for your output file type.
  18.    e. Type in the file name you want to save it as,
  19.       or simply use the default.
  20.    f. Choose "OK" to begin.
  21.    g. Select "CANCEL" to quit the export function.

  23. To export using a version AFTER 2.1 (including v 2.1):
  24.    a. Choose "I/O" from the pull-down menu.
  25.    b. Select "Export Column-Formatted File..."
  26.    c. Type in the file name you want to save it as,
  27.       or simply use the default.
  28.    d. Choose "OK" to begin.

  31. 3. Exit the program.  (ALT-Backspace)
  32.  
  33. 4. If your previous version was PRIOR to version 2.1 (excluding
  34.    version 2.1), delete any blank lines at the top of the file 
  35.    you just exported with any ASCII text editor.  DOS's edit or 
  36.    Window's Notepad should work.  Delete the lines down to the 
  37.    Business Name field, which is normally the first field with 
  38.    text.  If you do not have a business name for that entry, 
  39.    leave one line blank line at the top so that there is a blank 
  40.    line then the First Name field.  If there is no first name, 
  41.    leave two blank lines so that there is two blank lines and 
  42.    then the Middle Initial.  If there is no middle initial leave 
  43.    three blank lines at the top so...

  45. 5. Install the new version of this program.  (See 
  46.    "README.TXT" for instructions if needed.)

  48. 6. Start the new version.
  49.  
  50. 7. Import the file you exported above.
  51.    a. Choose "I/O" from the pull-down menu.
  52.    b. Select "Import Full List in Column Format".
  53.    c. Since the only entry in the database should be the one
  54.       that installs with the program, you can select "NO" to
  55.       make any backups of the current database.  (Selecting 
  56.       "YES" won't hurt either.)
  57.    d. Select the file you exported above in step 2.

  59. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen to make sure everything 
  60.    imported ok.

  62. 9. Once you have reviewed the entries and are sure they are
  63.    correct, you may delete the backup copy of your old data.
  64.  
  65. 10.  This would be a good point to make a backup copy of your 
  66.      new program, particularly the data.  To make a backup of 
  67.      the data only:
  68.      a. Select "File" from the program's pull-down menu.
  69.      b. Select "Backup and Compress Database...".
